What is 'pyxis'?

Wes is an amateur astronomer and has named this company for the constellation Pyxis (latin for compass). Pyxis is associated with the constellation Argo Navis because of their proximity and similar nautical references. Argo Navis depicts the ship Argo, used by Jason and the Argonauts in Greek mythology. Argo Navis is no longer recognised as a contellation, having been broken up into several smaller constellations: Carina (the keel), Puppis (the poop), and Vela (the sails).

The compass box has often been used as a symbol of guidance and direction, for obvious reasons. It has entered various forms of craft, as in the quilter's Mariner's Compass, jewelry, and the compass rose of maps.
